Michael Welch, a native of North Quincy, Mass., will be participating in his first U.S. Open … barely. Welch didn’t file his U.S. Open entry until 90 minutes before the deadline on April 29. He made it through local qualifying at the Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston, Mass., and then punched his ticket to Bethpage following a 3-under 138 at the Purchase, N.Y. sectional qualifier. By participating in the U.S. Open, Welch has now qualified for the grand slam of USGA championships in which he has been eligible (U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur, U.S. Amateur Public Links, U.S. Junior Amateur).

Bob Vokey takes notes as he discusses wedges with U.S. Open participant Michael Welch. Voke built 48°, 54° and 58° wedges for Michael in preparation for this week.

The track is wet and playing long, and we will keep you up-to-date when our Titleist Brand Ambassadors make any adjustments to their set compositions in preparation for Thursday’s official start.

To kick things off, Titleist wedge craftsman Bob Vokey sat down recently with Tour Insider and GolfChannel.com equipment editor David Allen for an in-depth interview which he tabbed “18 Questions with Bob Vokey.” Some good inside stuff with the Voke, who will be one of the busiest men at Bethpage Black today through Wednesday. With over 40 percent of the field carrying at least one Vokey Design wedge in his bag, chances are good that another major champion will be thanking Voke come Sunday.

Some new features have been added to Vokey.com in the past few days. The first is a guide to the grinds that Voke has developed through his work over the past decade on the PGA Tour and that have shaped the sole profiles in the new line of Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges as well as the Vokey Wedge Works limited release wedges. The Vokey Grind Guide can be found at:

Vokey Grind Guide at Vokey.com

Also, we currently have a very limited number (200 each) of 60° wedges with the E and L Grinds available in Vokey Wedge Works. These wedges feature a special black QPQ finish, and are available for delivery to U.S. addresses only.

Last but not least, we have added a video that provides background on the new line of Vokey Design Spin Milled wedges, including insights from Voke on the specific grinds that influenced this line as well as his thoughts on the Spin Milled process. The video can be viewed by clicking on the image below.

We hope you enjoy, be sure to check out Vokey.com for more.

Titleist Brand Ambassador Scott Strange rallied on the back nine to post a final round 4-under 68 at the Volvo China Open, securing a one-stroke victory. Strange began his final round four strokes off the pace, but three back-nine birdies gave him the winning total of 8-under 280. It marks the second career victory for Strange, who won first time at last year’s Celtic Manor Wales Open.

Titleist was the most played golf ball at The Volvo China Open with 105 players (68%), compared to 24 for the nearest competitor. The win was the ninth by Titleist golf ball loyalists on the 2009 European Tour, three times more than the nearest competitor with 3.

Earlier this week, we wrote about Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy’s visit to our Oceanside Test Facility in preparation for this week’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship. While at Oceanside, Rory worked with Tour Fitting Manager Cliff Walzak and Master Craftsman Bob Vokey to find a pitching wedge that provided the proper yardage gaps with his 9-iron and 52° approach wedge.

“Rory arrived with an uncomfortable yardage gap between his ZM 9-iron and his 200 Series 48° pitching wedge,” relays Cliff. “His 9-iron is bent 1° strong at 42°, while his 248.06 is at the stock 48° loft. We did not want to touch his gamer 248.06 wedge but decided to bend a 48° Vokey to 46°.”

Voke and his team built Rory a couple of 248s bent to 46°, both finished at 35.75″ (standard length) with Project X 6.5 shafts, and 65° lie angles (1° upright). Rory uses the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord 58 ribbed grip with one extra layer of tape, and has RORY stamped in white on the flange.

Voke checked back in with Rory earlier this week in Tucson, and said, “Rory likes the lower flight of the new 248 at 46°, as well as the feel of the club through the turf. He has noticed an increase in distance that gives him a preferred yardage gap with his 9-iron. He looks really solid out here. I like his confidence.”

Titleist Brand Ambassador Nick Watney made two birdies over the final three holes to capture the Buick Invitational by one shot. Nick drained a 40-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-3 16th, then completed his dramatic come-from-behind victory with a birdie on the final hole for the win. He closed with a 4-under 68 to finish at 11-under 277.

It was the second career win for Nick, whose first victory came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2007. He is off to a fast start through his first three events in 2009, opening his season with a T-25 at the Bob Hope Classic, followed by a T-12 at the FBR Open, and now a win at the Buick Invitational. Nick is currently 2nd in the 2009 FedEx Cup Standings and secured an invitation to this year’s Masters with the victory.

Watney has made wholesale changes to his equipment this year. Working with long-time instructor Butch Harmon, Nick is playing a new 909D2 driver and AP2 irons.
