Check out this morning’s article in USA Today featuring the AP2 irons that are being played with success by Adam Scott and many others on the Titleist Tour staff.

I have just ordered a set of AP2 irons, but I’ve been told the wait time is 10 weeks. Is this purely due to the high demand for these irons?

I’m looking at buying some new Titleist clubs. I’m playing off about a 12 or 14 and would like to know the difference between the AP1 and AP2 irons.

Please reference the AP1 and AP2 product pages on Titleist.com to discover the differences.

I currently use the 755 irons with 3985 stiff graphite shafts due to a shoulder accident which occurred several years ago. From a comparison stand point, does the 755 equally compare to the AP1 or AP2? Which shaft is comparable in a heavier weight graphite?

Can you please tell me why the AP2 irons have the Project X 5.5 as the stock shaft? Isn’t this the equivalent of a Dynamic Gold S300 (i.e., stiff)?

Thanks

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on June 13, 2008 at 11:45 am

Extensive consumer testing during the development phase for AP2 irons revealed that players preferred the feel of the AP2/Project X 5.5 combination. Read more about the differences and similarities between Dynamic Gold and Project X on FittingWorks.com.

I have been playing another manufacturer’s clubs for 8 months now and was never that sure of them. I got custom fitted today by my pro at Scotscraig Golf Club in Scotland, and after trying various shafts and heads from the fitting cart I was fitted for the AP2 irons with Dynamic Gold shaft. I was a bit worried about the high launch shaft into the wind as it’s always windy but the AP2s blew that concern away. These irons are superb, I’m hitting the 6 iron 15 - 20 yards further than my old clubs with a nice high flight.

I have always been a fan of Titleist irons. I am actually playing a set from about 10 years ago (DCI 962s w/ Rifle 6.5) and haven’t had a reason to switch. I am about a 4 index and have heard the buzz about the new clubs and was thinking of going to a newer iron. I am confused though as to the difference between the AP2 and the Z Forged irons. Any thoughts on which way to go. I have always been a strong iron player especially the short irons. Also, I have been playing the Rifle 6.5 and like the feel. Any thoughts on the best shaft available? I would like to stay with something similar. It would be nice to have something in mind going into it. Thanks!

What is the stock shaft for the AP2s? Is it the regular Project X or the Flighted version?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on April 20, 2008 at 1:04 pm

As indicated on the AP2 product page on Titleist.com, the stock shaft for AP2 is Project X.

I have been playing another manufacturer’s irons since I started playing golf about a year ago. I’ve progressed somewhat quickly and consistently shoot in the high 80s to low 90s. I’ve been looking to step up to more advanced clubs, but still something that is forgiving enough. Would the AP1s be a good fit for me? What are the biggest differences I would see between the AP1s and my current clubs? Thanks.

Congratulations on your rapid improvement! We recommend consulting with an Authorized Titleist FittingWorks Partner to determine if the AP1 irons are a good fit for your game.

After hitting a bunch of clubs it seems to me that the AP1 falls somewhere between the AP2 (player’s club) and something more “game improving.” Is this a fair assessment?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on April 9, 2008 at 11:46 am

Titleist AP1 irons are advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity irons providing great looks, feel, shot control and higher flight with forgiveness that are targeted for the skilled and aspiring player. Titleist AP2 irons are advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity, technical forged irons providing traditional solid feel, looks and shot control that are targeted for the skilled player.

What 2-iron was Adam Scott using at the WGC-CA Championship last week and what was the loft?

Adam was using a prototype AP2 2-iron at the WGC-CA Championship.

I live in Montreal, and I’d like to know where in Plattsburgh I could find a golf store that sells Titleist AP2 irons and a prototype Scotty Cameron putter? If you know the price it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. I love this site and visit it regularly, thanks again.

AP2 irons? I looked at the AP2 site and noticed the CG is below the center support of the iron. So is the sweet spot in the lower 1/3 of the face? What happens to the shot if your ball strike is in the upper half to 3/4 of the face? I realize the density of Tungsten is 2.3 times that of 1025 carbon steel but is this a cost effective engineering decision? Tungsten costs are 15 times that of 1025 not including the additional welding process. Thanks.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on March 26, 2008 at 1:13 pm

For optimal shot results, we don’t recommend striking the ball in the upper half to 3/4 of the face with any iron model.

Great site, appreciate the work! Just doing due diligence - are the AP2 forged irons designed to increase the spin rate compared to the 695MBs? Thanks for the info.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on March 24, 2008 at 6:54 pm

The multi-material, dual cavity design of the Titleist AP2 irons locates the center of gravity in the center, low, and deep to improve launch conditions compared to traditional blade irons. The box structure and tungsten nickel material tune low frequency vibration for unmatched solid feel.

Will the new Titleist mesh hat with PRO V1 on the side be available to the public? I noticed Adam had it on during the WGC-CA Championship.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on March 24, 2008 at 12:47 pm

The new logo treatment will be a rolling change to the A-FLEX flexible fit sports mesh hat (Style #AF8-13) that Adam wears. You should start to see it in golf shops shortly.

I don’t understand how it’s possible to have a forged club head with Tungsten?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on March 24, 2008 at 12:40 pm

The Titleist AP2 is a multi-material iron that features a forged 1025 carbon steel body with a high density tungsten nickel box that is laser welded to the back and sole. For more information, please visit the AP2 product page on Titleist.com.

Hello Tour blog! Dynamic Gold shafts have been popular on tour for decades. A lot of players today, though, are using stepless shafts. What is the advantage of the “old” DG shaft against the modern shafts?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on March 24, 2008 at 12:33 pm

The main difference between traditional shafts with steps (e.g., Dynamic Gold) and stepless shafts (e.g., Project X) is feel. The stepless shafts anecdotally feel different than stepped shafts as the lack of steps keep vibrations from being amplified as they move up the shaft.

Can you advise when the new SureFit iron fitting systems with the AP1 and AP2 heads will be sent to your fitting partners in the central Florida area?

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on March 20, 2008 at 5:12 pm

SureFit systems featuring 10 interchangeable iron heads and 15 shafts will begin shipping to our Titleist FittingWorks Partners nationwide within the next couple of weeks. Our Advanced FittingWorks Centers, which receive SureFit systems featuring 20 interchangeable iron heads and 21 shafts, will be receiving their systems in early April.

I know that Adam uses a 50° Vokey bent to 49 as his pitching wedge, but does he have Dynamic Gold X100s in all of his wedges as well as his irons? I got my AP2s in and I have to say that this is one of the BEST irons that Titleist has ever come out with. Are there any plans for a 2-iron to make its way to retail in the AP2s? Keep up the great work.

Titleist Golf Clubs wrote on March 19, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Adam uses DG X100 shafts in all of his irons and wedges. There are currently no plans to offer an AP2 2-iron.
