Players Comment on the New Titleist AP Irons

We’ve received several questions and comments regarding the switch to the new Titleist AP Irons by some of our full-line ambassadors, particularly traditional forged blade players like Adam Scott. If one were to play the AP1 irons with the 2° stronger lofts and Dynamic Gold S300 steel shafts, will the ball flight be close to the same trajectory as the AP2 irons with the same shafts?
All other things being equal, irons with 2° stronger lofts would theoretically produce a stronger trajectory. We recommend trying out both irons for yourself under the guidance of an Authorized Titleist FittingWorks Partner to determine the proper iron specs for your game.
With the Tour players that are playing the AP2s, are their clubs the same as what the consumer will get in the golf shop, or is there a Tour-only model with reduced offset and a thinner sole and top line?
There are no Tour-only versions of any of the new Titleist irons. The AP2s being used by Adam and a number of our other players are the same heads that will be available in golf shops. They are, of course, custom fit to each player’s specifications in terms of length, lie angle, loft, shaft and grip.
Which shafts have been giving the guys on Tour the best feedback in the AP2?
The players have largely been sticking with the shafts that they played in their irons previous to the AP2s.
Do the AP2s provide all the Tour players with higher launch conditions and more spin than their previously played blades?
The Titleist AP2 irons are designed to ease the ball flight up compared to traditional forged blades, particularly in the long irons.
I have just ordered a set of the AP2s from my pro. I have a high ball flight so I ordered the irons with Dynamic Gold S400 shafts in order to help lower my trajectory. Would you recommend the S400s or the Project X shafts for these heads? I am just curious and want to be sure I have made the right decision before the irons ship. Thanks in advance for the help!

I have been playing 695MBs for awhile now, and love them. I have been looking into something new and a little more forgiving, not much, but a little. I was wondering how the AP2s compare to a forged blade like the 695s or the new ZMs.

I just ordered my set of AP2s. I can’t wait for them to get in. I was fitted this past weekend and as a long time user of another company’s irons, I have to say that these irons are even better than the hype. My old clubs are OUT and the AP2s are in…FOR A LONG TIME!

I just ordered a set of the AP1s using my old fitting specs. I can’t wait to get them. I have been reading all the pro’s reviews and telling my friends about the AP1 AND AP2 irons and now even my friends are dropping the old blades and ordering the AP2s.

Unfortunately, Adam’s time was very tightly coordinated when he was in town last month, so we weren’t able to catch up with him at Oceanside. We did speak to him in LA, however, the results of which can be viewed above.
I am looking to get a new set of irons, Titleist of course. I’m a 2 handicap and am looking to bring down ball flight in either the AP2s or a Z Blend Forged or Z Muscle Forged head. What would your suggestion be to pursue further? Project X shaft in a 6.0 or 6.5 as well? Thanks.

Hi. I live in Auckland, New Zealand, and play off a handicap of 9. I have played Titleist clubs and Scotty Cameron putters for years. I appreciate their workmanship and technology. I currently use forged 690.CBs and I have loved them, especially for their classic and polished look. However, I’m getting less chance to practice and to play now, so I’d like to buy a slightly more forgiving set of irons. I am thinking about the Titleist AP1s. Am I right in thinking the Titleist AP2s would be similar in size to the 690.CBs, and therefore not too different in terms of forgiveness? We have limited opportunities here to be tested and fitted for Titleist clubs, which is why I’m asking you. Thanks for your assisitance.

The multi-material, dual cavity design of the Titleist AP2 irons is vastly different than the design of the 690.CBs. The high tech multi-material construction features a steel body, tungsten nickel sole, elastomer bar and aluminum cavity plate. These materials combine to deliver outstanding playing characteristics and superior feel. Although you mention that you have limited opportunities to test and get fitted for Titleist clubs, our recommendation will always be to consult with an Authorized Titleist FittingWorks Partner before purchasing your new Titleist irons.
I am planning to buy a set of Titleist AP1s and I would like some advice on the best shaft to use in these clubs. I do not want the Dynamic Golds, so I am looking at one of the Nippon options or maybe the Project X 5.5s. Two questions:
1. I’ve hit the Titleist AP2s with a Project X 5.5 shaft and I really like the feel and the ball flight. Which of the Nippon shafts, the NS PRO 100 or the NS PRO 970 has the most similar characteristics to the Project X 5.5?
2. I know that the Project X is the stock shaft for the AP2 and is perfectly tuned for that club head, but will it work just as well for the AP1?

I’m currently playing off a 9 handicap and love the look of the new Titleist irons. Are the AP irons only suitable for low single figure handicaps or pros? What sort of handicaps are they suitable for?

What is the difference between AP1 and AP2? I have tried the AP1 and liked them but found them to have quite a wide sole. Any ideas on what would be best?
