From the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles
February 15th, 2008
We had a chance to head up to Los Angeles this week to work with some of our players during the practice rounds for the Northern Trust Open at historic Riviera Country Club. Titleist ambassador and world number five Adam Scott is making his 2008 PGA Tour debut at Riviera. He’ll be looking to build on the momentum he generated with his win a few weeks ago at the European Tour Commercialbank Qatar Masters using the new Titleist AP2 irons. Titleist ambassadors Davis Love III, Nick Watney, and Troy Matteson also put the new AP2 irons in play for the first time this week. Click here to view photos from Tuesday and Wednesday practice rounds at Riviera.

Has anyone put the new Z Blend Forged or Z Muscle Forged irons in play yet?
Yes. Titleist ambassador Chez Reavie is among those who have moved into the new Z Muscle Forged irons this season. The majority of our players switching irons this year, though, are enjoying the Advanced Performance of the new Titleist AP2 irons. Be sure to check out our Players Page on Titleist.com for the most up-to-date equipment information for all of our Titleist full-line players.
I went to a demo day event last weekend and tried the new Titleist AP2 and Z Blend irons. I’m a 9 handicap (but it would be lower if my short game were as good as my long game) who has been playing another company’s blended iron set. I found the Z Blends to be very, very pure - with much better feel, sound, and flight than my current irons. I ordered the Z Blends and by the end of this month they should be in my bag. They were the purest feeling iron I’ve ever hit.
Thanks Rob…enjoy your new Titleist Z Blend Forged irons.
What could be making all of these “blade” players switch to a larger head-shaped iron? Are they getting the same (or better) feedback from the new clubs?
Be sure to see for yourself when the new Titleist AP Irons hit golf shops in late-March. In the meantime, see what the players themselves are saying about the irons by visiting the In Play section of the Titleist AP Irons microsite.
It is interesting to see some of the players change from blade style irons to something like AP2. I was surprised guys such as Adam Scott, Davis Love III and Nick Watney switch to AP2, knowing they used blade style irons before. Can you tell us a bit why this happened? And, what shaft is Davis Love using in his AP2s? Thank you!
See the comment above and be sure to visit the Titleist AP Irons microsite. Davis is using True Temper Dynamic Gold X100s in his AP2s.
Way to go Titleist, looks like the AP2s are a huge hit with the Tour players. I noticed that Adam Scott had a 2-iron in his bag. Is the AP2 set going to come complete with 2-iron availability? Also, does the custom department do swingweight changes from the standard D2 to, let’s say, D4? Look forward to the new Titleist season, and keep up the good work.
There are currently no plans to offer an AP2 2-iron in golf shops. The Titleist Custom Club Department does not build clubs to specified swingweights.
Look like these AP2 irons are creating a real buzz…not only amongst your Tour players, but there’s definitely a lot of chat about them all over the net. They do look sweet and promise some real benefits to the user. Good to see you guys making some technological advances with your irons.
Are the AP2 irons slightly more forgiving and softer feeling than the 755s? If one were to blend a set, 3-5 AP1 and 6-W AP2 with S300 steel shafts, will their be a distance gap or flight difference between the 5 and 6 irons? I currently play Cobra forged cavity backs, S300 shafts, 8 handicap medium/high ball flight, 95 to 100 mph driver speed. How does the Tri•Spec shaft compare to the S300 shaft? I sometimes feel the S300 is a little stiff in the long irons.
The multi-material, dual cavity design of the Titleist AP irons tunes vibrations for outstanding feel. The standard lofts on the AP1 irons are 2° stronger than on the AP2 irons, therefore, one might experience a yardage gap if they were to mix stock irons. We recommend visiting an Authorized Titleist FittingWorks Partner to be properly fit for your new Titleist irons. Also, you may want to check out the Titleist Shaft Matrix on Titleist.com for more information on the True Temper Dynamic Gold and Titleist Tri•Spec shafts.
What type of grips are those on Davis Love’s irons?
Golf Pride Decade Multi-Compound in Carolina Blue, .600″ round, installed upside-down so the Golf Pride logo is underneath.
Why is there a 907D2 headcover on the drivers of Adam Scott and Davis Love III when the website clearly states that both players are still playing the 905R?
The 907D2 headcover is the only driver headcover kept in stock in the Tour Van.
I wish you guys had some custom swingweight options. I do not use Titleist irons only because I play 3/4″ over and do not want a D8 swingweight. Some other companies use lighter heads on longer shafts, can’t you? I use Vokey wedges but have huge holes drilled in the back flanges.
Thanks for your feedback on our golf club swingweight options. We’ll be sure to pass it on to our manufacturing team.
When did Mike Hulbert start caddying for DLIII? Hulbert has won on the PGA Tour.
Mike has caddied for DLIII periodically in the past, including at last year’s Open Championship.
Is Steve Stricker using a Scotty Cameron putter this year? Or maybe just a red Cameron grip on his old putter?
Strick had his old putter re-gripped in LA.
What is Adam’s wedge combination? Did I see a 50° in the bag?
Adam has a 50° that is bent to 49°, a 56° that is bent to 55°, and a 60°.
For the AP2, is a 3-PW set available for purchase or is there only the 4-GW?
The new Titleist irons can be custom-ordered in a variety of set compositions. Be sure to visit your Authorized Titleist FittingWorks Partner to get fit for your ideal set of new Titleist irons.
I saw on a few pictures on the Titleist Tour Blog some orange-white striped plastic sticks in the bags. I further saw them used as swing helpers. My question: Any idea which company sells these? Are they available for amateurs?
These are actually fiberglass driveway reflector poles that have been re-purposed as training aids. You can likely find them at your local hardware or automotive store.
What is the swingweight of the 905R driver with the UST Proforce V2 75 shaft?
The swingweight on a standard length (45″) 905R driver with the UST Proforce V2 75 shaft is approximately D2.
I have been hearing about a new prototype driver coming around, do you guys have any comment on the driver people are calling the 909 series?
Titleist develops many prototype products for performance-validation testing on Tour. Some of these products are never released to the consumer market. Please check Titleist.com often for current product information.
Is there some reason I could not get Carolina blue grips on my Z Blends? The rep said I could only get red. I score much lower with light blue grips! (ok… so I made that up) I’m also surprised more of the blade Tour players are not going to the Z Blends rather than the AP2s. Are any of them using Z Blends? I’m beginning to wonder if I didn’t detect something during my tryout of both the AP2 and Z Blends. But judging from the way I hit them, I’m sticking with my decision. Better yet, they should be in and ready for me to pick up this week! Unfortunately, we are still in the 30s here in Michigan, but thank goodness for Carl’s Golfland heated tees!
In order to minimize the amount of inventory we keep on hand, we try to limit our stock of components to the most popular choices. We will, however, gladly ship most club orders without grips installed if you desire a grip model that we do not offer.
On Tour, Greg Kraft won the Puerto Rico Open last weekend with the new Titleist Z Blend Forged irons. Other players using the Z•Bs include Jason Bohn and Johnson Wagner.
Just want to ask, what are the bounces on Adam’s wedges?
Hey guys,
I finally got my new Z Blend irons with Project X Flighted shafts. It was quite windy here today, but I hit a big bucket anyway. I’m a fairly accomplished iron player, and I must say these are the most marvelous feeling irons I have ever hit. I was easily able to hit fades to hold it against the wind, as well as draws and knock-downs. These clubs behaved like a well-trained dog, but it’s the feel that really set these apart. The ball just rockets off the club face. I played another manufacturer’s similar forged blended set, but they never behaved like the Z•Bs do (fades were always difficult with the other clubs). Anyway, hats off to your designers, I can tell I’m going to have some super rounds with these irons. One other note, I found that with these shafts, the ball flight was higher than I expected, so I may have them de-lofted a bit after I get a few rounds in with them. Thanks again for a marvelous set of clubs, or should I say more appropriately, well-behaved instruments.
