Advanced Performance at the Buick Invitational
January 25th, 2008
We recently unveiled our new line of Titleist Advanced Performance irons, and several of our Tour players have already put the irons into their bags. We were able to catch up with a few of these players this week at the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines, near our West Coast operations outside of San Diego. Be sure to click on the image below to see the complete gallery.

The new AP irons look great! Just wondering if any of the players put the new Z irons into play this week?
We have two sets of Z•M Forged irons in play this week at the Buick Invitational: Titleist ambassador Chez Reavie and another player who is not under contract for irons, and who we thus can not name.
Nice irons Titleist. I have the 695MB set. What differences are there between those and the new Z•B Forged iron? Also, have any staff players switched to the new blade yet? Great blog site by the way - keep up the good work from all in South Yorkshire, England.
The 695MB are forged muscle back irons with a Z-muscle design that shifts the center of gravity closer to the face center for a solid feel, more efficient energy transfer and consistent launch conditions. The Z•B Forged are high performance, blended cavity-to-muscle back forged irons with traditional feel, superior looks and shot control.
Any particular reason that Adam Scott has switched from 695MB to Z•M Forged, to 680, to AP2? Just curious if he is testing them or do they provide different characteristics for specific course set ups? Thanks for the great info. Love the new bags by the way.
-Roy
Thanks Roy. Like the rest of us, Adam likes to test new equipment and is always trying to dial in the optimal set. He has indicated that, despite having a thicker look than he is used to, the new Titleist AP2 irons provide him with great ball flight.
I have a set of the 735.CM irons and have certainly enjoyed them over the last year and a half. How do they compare to the new Z•B Forged? And are the Z•B Forged short irons similar (or the same) to the Z•M Forged?
The 735.CM and Z•B Forged are both blended cavity-to-muscle back forged irons. The Z•B Forged irons feature a Z shaped back design that moves weight from the heel to toe centering the CG for solid feel, consistent ball speed, launch and spin. The Z•B Forged and Z•M Forged short irons (8-P) share the same specs. Click here for more on all of the new Titleist iron models for 2008.
Thanks much for the reply. Decisions, decisions come late March, I guess. From first appearance, those Z•M Forged irons look like the direction I may head in, however…
Thanks again
David
I noticed Billy Mayfair uses a 907D1 driver. What are his loft and shaft specs? Also, which other ambassadors are gaming the 907D1? Thanks!
Billy uses a 7.5° 907D1 finished with a 45″ X-flex Graphite Design Purple Ice. He is currently our only Tour player using the 907D1.
I have enjoyed the feel and playability of the 755 irons. Are there any similarities to the new AP2 irons?
Is there a difference in playability and performance between the 755 irons and the new AP2? What shaft options will be available? Great new bags by the way!
It is difficult to compare the new Titleist AP irons to previous generations of Titleist irons. We can say that the new Titleist AP2 irons are advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity, technical forged irons with traditional solid feel, looks and shot control for the skilled player. The stock shaft for the AP2 irons will be Project X 5.5. Custom shaft options will be in accordance with the shaft matrix posted on Titleist.com.
We recommend that you go try the new Titleist irons for yourself when they become available in late March to see how they compare to your current irons.
I can’t wait to try out the new Titleist irons. Is the head weight and size of the new AP2 irons much larger than the Z•M Forged irons?
In previous posts I noticed that you mentioned Zach Johnson uses Dynamic Gold X100 soft-stepped shafts. Could you please reveal how many times Zach’s clubs are soft-stepped? I heard it was a 2 club difference…could you please confirm this for me?
Zach soft-steps one club.
Just a quick question…how are the Z•M Forged irons different than the 695MBs? They look similar except with a different badge - which isn’t necessarily a bad thing because they’re both great looking irons.
The Z•M Forged irons are the next generation of the 695MBs, and are high performance, muscle back forged irons with traditional feel, superior looks and shot control for the highly skilled player. We recommend checking them out when they get to golf shops in late March so you can judge for yourself.
I have one more question: What is it about the rumors regarding the 907D4 driver? Will it come out in 2008?
There are no plans to release the 907D4 driver to golf shops.
When will the 755 irons I am playing now leave your line-up, and what will substitute your 735.CM blended set? I have always loved your classic looking clubs as I do not believe in rocket science for golf, so it’s time for a deeper glance at your new clubs…
Prior generations of Titleist irons will leave the line-up as current golf shop inventory levels are depleted. The new Z•B Forged irons are high performance, blended cavity-to-muscle back forged irons with traditional feel, superior looks and shot control for the highly skilled player, and can be considered the next generation blended set in the new irons line-up.
How can one purchase the staff bag that is shown on Tour in 2008 with Adam Scott and others? It has some outlines in red on it, not the gray or silver of the older staff bags.
As we’ve stated in other posts, the new Titleist staff bag will be available in golf shops this spring.
Craig, I saw the new bag you’re talking about. The 9 1/2” bag is style S83. I think the 10 1/2” is style S82. Great looking bags aren’t they?
Which wedges are Ben Curtis using? When will they be released in golf shops?
Ben is using prototype Vokey Design TVD wedges. You can read more about them here.
I noticed that the lofts of the AP2 iron are a little stronger than the lofts of the 695MBs I have now. Did Adam Scott have the lofts changed to fit his current iron distances, or do the club dynamics of the AP2 cause them to play similar? Thanks.
Adam’s new Titleist AP2 irons are all bent 1° weaker than standard.
I am an 8 handicap player, can I use the new Titleist AP1 or AP2 irons?
The new Titleist AP1 irons are advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity irons providing great looks, feel, shot control and higher flight with forgiveness for the skilled and aspiring player. The Titleist AP2 irons are advanced performance, multi-material, dual cavity, technical forged irons providing traditional solid feel, looks and shot control for the skilled player. We recommend visiting an Authorized Titleist FittingWorks Partner to determine which of the new Titleist irons are right for your game.
Where are the Z Muscle Forged irons actually forged?
The new Titleist Z Muscle Forged iron heads are forged in China. The clubs themselves are assembled at our Clubs Assembly Facility in Carlsbad, California.
I’m a 2 handicap player, and I play with another manufacturer’s irons with regular steel shafts. I want to change to Titleist, but I’m a bit confused about the performance of the Titleist AP2 and Z Muscle Forged. I used to play blade irons, so I don’t know if the AP2 irons (with cavity) would be the best option. At the same time, I don’t know if the Z Muscle Forged irons’ face area is smaller than my current irons. And, even though the offset is quite small, would it favor a draw?
