From the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
August 3rd, 2007
We were able to catch up with a lot of players this week at Firestone Country Club as they prepared for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. It’s an important stretch right now on the PGA Tour, with the PGA Championship next week at Southern Hills and the FedEx Cup playoffs beginning two weeks later at the Barclays Classic in New York. Everyone’s working hard to make sure they’re on top of their game. Be sure to check out the photos of the action from earlier this week.

Has Zach switched to a 907 driver or is he just using the headcover?
Zach is just using the headcover, he still has his trusty Pro Titanium 905R in the bag.
Did Adam Scott switch back to the 905R driver? And what shafts are in his woods?
Yes, Adam is using the Pro Titanium 905R again. His woods have UST Proforce V2 shafts in them.
Great pics! It’s nice to see a variety of Titleist staffers and golf ball players this week. Keep up the good work.
The new bag with the red trim is sweet. Thanks for all the great pics.
Can you tell us why Zach Johnson had two drivers in the bag? Different lofts maybe? Keep up the good work.
One’s his gamer, the other is a back-up. He likes to work with both during practice rounds to make sure he has a feel for both, but he always goes with the gamer on Thursday.
Great pics! The new staff bags look nice also.
Does Titleist have a special relationship with UST, or do players just like them over other shafts? Nice to see some color in the staff bag.
We work with all of the major shaft manufacturers. The UST Proforce V2 shaft just happens to be a popular choice among many of our players at the moment.
What length shaft does Adam Scott use in his driver?
45″.
Any idea when we will see the staff bag that Adam has been using in golf shops? It looks fantastic.
The bag Adam has been testing is a prototype, which may or may not be be released for sale in golf shops.
Does Adam Scott use the new Pro V1?
Yes.
Why does Adam Scott take out a pitching wedge and put in a Vokey Design 200 Series 50° wedge?
The 50° Vokey wedge that Adam uses effectively serves as his pitching wedge. Voke recommends a 4° - 6° gap between wedges, and with Adam’s 9-iron at 44°, he achieves this with the 50° pitching/gap wedge, a 55° sand wedge, and a 60° lob wedge. For more on Titleist’s wedge fitting methodology, developed with Bob Vokey, visit FittingWorks.com.
Why does Adam Scott not play the 585.H utility any more? And why did he go back to the 905R?
Adam often alters his set composition depending on the types of shots he will need to hit at a particular venue. Don’t be surprised to see the 585.H utility back in his bag at some point. The 905R is an extremely good driver that Adam has achieved a lot of success with and has a lot of confidence in. Additionally, we are able to optimize Adam’s launch conditions and driver performance with both the the 905R and the 907D2, so he is able to choose the driver that he feels most confident with on any given week.
How often do the guys, on average, replace their Spin Milled wedges as the grooves will wear down after a while? I’ve heard some will switch as often as every month and others tend to hold on to them quite a long while. Can you somehow resharpen the grooves?
Most of our Tour players replace their wedges every six months, on average. Resharpening grooves is not recommended as wear to the wedge affects the face as well as the grooves. Groove depth is probably more important than the sharpness of the groove in imparting spin on the ball from the rough or sand. Wear on the face decreases the effective depth of the grooves and, as such, wedges should be replaced when the faces get worn.
What is an easy way to tell if your wedge needs to be replaced?
The answer to this question is somewhat subjective, but once the wedge no longer performs the way you expect it to, you should replace it.
What distance does Adam Scott usually hit his 8-iron?
Stock 8-iron distance for Adam is 160 yards.
What is Adam’s launch angle and spin rate with his driver combination as well as his rough swing speed?
Adam’s approximate launch data with the driver is: 118 mph club head speed, 178 mph ball speed, 9.5° launch angle and 2,700 rpm spin rate.
Does Nick Watney use a cross-handed grip (left hand low) for his putting?
As shown in the slideshow picture, Nick does, in fact, use a cross-handed grip to putt.
Could you provide all of Adam’s yardages for this entire set of clubs? Thanks for the input! Just curious as this is fun info for us amateurs as to how far they are hitting their irons and wedges!
Adam’s approximate yardages throughout the set:
2-iron - 240 yards
3-iron - 230 yards
4-iron - 215 yards
5-iron - 200 yards
6-iron - 185 yards
7-iron - 170 yards
8-iron - 160 yards
9-iron - 145 yards
50° wedge - 130 yards
55° wedge - 115 yards
60° wedge - 100 yards
Are those distances on the fly or is roll included? Thanks.
Those are approximate carry distances.
Is Adam Scott’s 906F prototype closer to the 906F2 or 906F4, and what shaft, including weight and length, is in Adam’s 906F?
Adam uses the 906F4 fairways, which are no longer prototypes and will be arriving in golf shops in September. His 15.5° fairway has a UST Proforce V2 X-flex shaft at 43″ and 96 grams.
It is mentioned above that Adam Scott’s driver is 45″. Do most players use this “standard” length? Which players use a shorter shaft length and how much shorter are they? Thanks.
Almost all of the drivers we build in the Tour Van are between 44.5″ and 45″.
I really love it when you show pictures like these. Please post these kinds of things on the blog more often. Thanks.
Are there any new irons coming out soon?
Our policy is not to comment on products that may or may not be in development. Please visit Titleist.com often for the latest product news.
When will the new Tour bag be available to buy in Holland?
The new Tour bag looks very nice.
Could you list Adam Scott’s launch angles for all of his clubs? Especially the irons! Thank you!
We haven’t kept Adam’s launch monitor data for all of his clubs, but here is a pretty good sampling:
Driver - 9.5°
3-wood (from turf) - 7°
5-wood (from turf) - 10°
3-iron - 11°
5-iron - 13°
8-iron - 19°
Pitching Wedge - 23.5°
Thank you!
Can you also list Adam’s clubhead speed and ball speed for the clubs listed above? These stats are so interesting! Thank you again!
