Arron Oberholser works with Scotty at THE PLAYERS

May 7th, 2007

Arron Oberholser spent some time in the Tour Van today with Scotty Cameron. Arron has adjusted his set-up to where his arms are more relaxed and less mechanical, and wanted to try a little longer length. He asked Scotty to make a couple Circa 62 No. 6 putters at 36″, an inch longer than he normally plays, and 2° flat. Arron put the Circa 62 No. 6 with the Charcoal Mist finish in his bag for the first time at the EDS Byron Nelson Championship. According to Arron, the B-Back design of the No. 6 model looks better to his eye, and he loves the sound which he translates into better feel. One of the new putters is made of German Stainless Steel (GSS) with a chrome finish, while the other is Carbon Steel with a gun-blued Tour Black finish. Arron plans to work with the putters during the week to determine which he’ll use as his gamer at THE PLAYERS.

To add on to the comment above I would also love to see some new head styles, especially a Napa-style head.

It would be cool to see more production putters offered in 340g and 350g headweights, and 34″ and 33″ lengths. I think many others feel the same way. Also, bringing back a production non-insert Newport/Newport2/LongNeck would be nice as well! Just my feedback and suggestions. Thanks for a great blog.

Does Scotty do anything to the headweight when a player wants the putter to be longer? Also, is Arron working with someone besides Scotty on his putting (i.e., Stan Utley)? I know he recommends a flat putter lie angle. Thanks again for a great blog and great information.

Depending on the player’s request, we will lighten the putter head for a longer length or simply make the putter longer while leaving the weight as is, creating a putter a bit on the heavy side. It is a personal preference. In Arron’s case, the head was made lighter to accommodate the increased length. As a rule, when we create production putters, shorter putters get heavier heads and longer putters get lighter heads.

Also, Arron is working with Stan Utley.
