What’s in the Bag: Nick Watney

Titleist ambassador Nick Watney won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans for his first PGA Tour title, finishing with a 15-under 273 total and a three-stroke victory over New Pro V1 player Ken Duke. The 25-year-old Watney closed with a 3-under 69. Watney’s victory marks the third in four weeks for Titleist ambassadors on the PGA Tour following Adam Scott (Shell Houston Open) and Zach Johnson (Masters). The win is also the 11th this season for Titleist golf ball players, more than five times the nearest competitor with 2, and more than all other balls combined. My current set of irons are the 731PMs and I just recently found out that the lofts are set stronger than most current clubs (around 2°-3°). I have become used to them so I really don’t want to weaken them or anything. I was wanting to know if you can give me any advice on what wedge lofts would be best to put in the bag to help cover the gaps. My PW loft is 45° and I currently play with 54° & 58° Spin Milled. Mr. Vokey, your input would be greatly appreciated since you are the wedge king.
You sound like a perfect candidate for adding a Vokey Design 250.08 wedge. I recommend a 4°-6° gap between wedges, and your current gap between your pitching and sand wedges is 9°. I also recommend visiting an Authorized Titleist FittingWorks Partner for a complete wedge fitting to ensure that all of your wedge specs (loft, lie, length, etc.) are correct.

What bounce angle do you recommend for a 60° wedge for someone who plays the majority of their golf in the Midwest (i.e., gushy turf and wet sand in the Spring, hard and dry in the late Summer, and wet in the Fall)?

I was working with Nick Watney on the driving range at the Wachovia Championship when I received your question. Nick and I discussed it a bit, and it sounds to us like you may want to try two wedges with the same loft but different bounces and rotate them depending on the conditions. Try a 260.08 when it’s gushy and 260.04 when it’s firm.

Yeah, that’s a lot of loft. I think we just assumed it must have been bent open where the effective loft was much lower than 11.5°. Also, 44½” on the driver and -¼" on the irons seems a bit strange for a tall guy (isn’t Nick 6′2″?).
Guess it just goes to show that everyone’s different and should be fitted accordingly!

Is he low launch or low spin? What makes him fit into an 11.5° driver?
How many degrees open is Nick’s driver bent?
If I remember correctly, his driver has never been bent.

Nick uses the Golf Pride New Decade MultiCompound 60 Round in all of his clubs (except the putter).
Hey Guys,
I was at the World Golf Fitness Summit this weekend and missed Nick’s victory on HD. Congrats to him! I’m interested in why Nick has the steel shaft in his 906F2. Being a Titleist fitter, I try to go progressively heavier from driver to 3-iron and it seems like the 906 is just a little bit out of line. But obviously Nick likes it!
I’d also love to hear the swing characterisics that led to an 11.5° 905R.
