Ben Curtis at The Heritage
April 10th, 2007
We’ve been working with Ben Curtis again this week at the Verizon Heritage Classic. Harbour Town Golf Links, the site of this week’s tournament, is one of the shortest courses on Tour, but one that requires the players to hit a variety of shots. Ben is looking for some more versatility with his long game clubs for Harbour Town, so we’re getting him set up with a 19° 585.H utility and a 695CB 3-iron. Both clubs will feature the same True Temper Dynamic Gold S-400 shafts that Ben uses in all of his irons. Ben tells us that the 585.H allows him to control his ball flight more easily, giving him the ability to hit both high and low shots as necessary. Likewise, the 695CB 3-iron gives him a more consistent ball flight that is suited for Harbour Town.

Do you think that it is a preference to have a steel shaft or a graphite shaft in your fairways or utilities? Is there a big difference in playing a steel shaft over a graphite shaft?
Graphite shafts for fairways and utilities are generally considerably lighter than steel shafts. This typically allows the player to generate a higher clubhead speed when using graphite and also has an effect on launch conditions and ball flight. A player will choose between graphite and steel shafts based on their preferred launch conditions and ball flight. We recommend visiting an Authorized Titleist FittingWorks Partner to determine the correct shafts for your PT 906F2 fairways and PT 585.H utilities.
What would you say is the most popular type of grip? Do certain grips work better with certain types of clubs? Do players use the same grip for all clubs?
Grip choice is largely a matter of personal preference. Almost without exception, Tour players will use the same style grip on all of their clubs (putters notwithstanding).
Which shafts, including flex and length, does Ben have in his driver and fairway wood?
Ben has the Aldila VS Proto 70-X in his 907D2 driver, and the VS Proto 80-X in his PT 906F2.
It seems that last year a lot of guys had the UST Proforce V2 in their drivers and fairways. Now this year you see a lot of Aldila VS Proto in the new woods. Is that shaft performing better?
Please see the comments here.
So, if Ben adds the 19° 585.H utility and the 695CB 3-iron, will he take out his current utilities?
Yes. Ben likes his current utilities, but he feels that the trajectories he achieves with the 585.H and 695CB are more conducive to playing Harbour Town.
