Can you tell us how you got started, and how one goes about getting into this profession?

I’m a non-exempt pro tournament player. I mainly play mini tour events with an occasional qualifier. I’ve been using bore-through drivers since the 975 series came out and I currently use a 905S 7.5°. I considered going with another brand of driver that wasn’t bore-through and I can’t believe the difference. I was told that the non bore-through are tipped differently and shouldn’t feel any different but I beg to differ. My 905S feels so much more solid on recoil and impact. Can you please shed some light on this topic.

Just been watching your segment on The Golf Channel. Very interesting van…it does seem like a home away from home!!!

My question to you is about Scotty Cameron Putters. I have an Original Futura, which has very little wear on it, as it is made so well…however, I was looking at the New Scotty Cameron Newport Detour and love the look of it. It seems like a balanced putter and looks awesome, however, the problem that I have is that I live in the UK and cannot get my hands on one!!! Are they sold on the van, or is it a custom item for the pros? I am a Scotty disciple and would not even think of using another putter manufacturer. Hail to the King!!! Can you help?

Thanks,
Simon

Steve, I am enjoying this website very much. Thank you for participating in it. And thanks to Titleist for setting it up.

As for Tour drivers, we often hear about Tour players’ drivers being measured and adusted in terms of loft and face angle to within 0.1 degrees. In standard-bore drivers, that process appears to be accomplished by bending, even though titanium alloys are not easy to bend. In blind-bore drivers with hosel sleeves, the process can be accomplished by the use of adjustible sleeves. Can you tell us how small face angle and loft adjustments are made to bore-through drivers on the Titleist Tour Van? What tool(s) do you use to measure lofts, lies and face angles on large driver heads?

As far as measuring loft angles we use a Dick de la Cruz machine. When we bend drivers, we designed a fixture that we can put our Titleist heads in and are able to bend them to whatever lie and loft players are looking for.

What a class act Mr. Mata & Bob Vokey are. To hear the story of him & Bob Vokey having to do whatever it takes to make the players happy is a testament to what the reps are all about, even if it involves sleeping on a hotel floor. Also the insight this site has to offer is something the public has been waiting for. Class acts, and excellent coverage.

Thank you!

Thank you for posting the interview with Mr. Mata. Great insight into what the class of that end of the business does. I loved the story of him and Mr. Vokey sleeping on the hotel floor, very glamorous! :) This website is fantastic!!!

Thank You,
Kevin

Hi,
Sorry for my English (I am French) but I just want to say that this new blog is very interesting. I love golf equipment and particulary the tour player’s equipment. The job of Steve must be very interesting but in the same time very tiring. I just want ask, what kind of studies Steve has made to be the fitter of the tour? Is it only based on his experiment along all those years passed on the tour? And can you show us more pictures of the inside tour van?
Thank you very much for this very good blog.
Martin

Martin, thanks for your interest in the new Titleist blog, we hope to keep this coming every week. As far as my skill in club fitting, I worked with Bob Vokey in the early years of my start in the business, but more than anything it has been all hands on training!
