Steve Mata with Prom Meesawat

March 20th, 2007

Yesterday was the first day I met Prom. He’s a hero over in Thailand but it was his first event here in the States. I definitely wanted to make a connection and get to know him a little and find out what he’s looking for. I built him a new 907 D2 driver, 45″, 8.5° loft, and Aldila VS Proto 60-X shaft. When we came to the range today, I just wanted to watch his ball flight and get his feedback. Prom really liked the head of the driver and thinks it feels good. I decided to build him a 9.5 loft as well to compare the flight.

It’s not as easy to get product in Thailand so I’m also building him a 3-wood (15°) and hybrid to take back to Thailand with him. I’ll stay in touch with Prom and keep working with him until he’s hitting it exactly the way he wants.

Question:
I’m moving from another manufacturer to Titleist irons. Trying to get a lower ball flight. 735 vs 755’s vs 695 CB? Not sure how to decide on which ones to buy. Any input would be great.

Thanks
Ron

It all depends on the kind of player you are. If you are looking for the more forgiving irons, then you might want to look at the 755 irons. However, if you want a blade to help you work the ball but still with a little more forgiveness, then you might want to take a good look at the 695CB irons. Whichever Titleist irons you choose, you should really get out and try them all first while also getting custom fit. Take a look at FittingWorks.com for more information.

Why are the 660s not promoted more as a lower ball flight club? From what I can tell only a couple of the players have this club in their bag…..what’s the story behind this blade? It looks and feels great.

Thanks,
Paul

Craig, it wouldn’t be accurate to say that MOST of the players use 45″ drivers, but there sure are a lot. We also find that 44 1/2″ drivers are pretty common.

I’m a big fan of “The Big Dolphin”, thanks for including him in the blog. Do most of the Titleist pros play a 45″ driver?

Prom plays with the 735.CM irons.

These are one of a kind hats made for Mata so that he is recognizable on the driving range each week. There are currently no plans to bring these to market.

Just wondering if the hat that Steve has on is available to the public…I couldn’t find it on the Titleist website.
